We are delighted to welcome Emily Bridge and her family and Ruth Jamera and her family to our school community.  Emily is in Miss Cudlipp’s class and Ruth is in Mrs Smith’s class.

You will see two adverts in the JEP for teachers at Grouville School and both of them will probably be a surprise to you.  One is for a Year 5 teacher and one is for a Reception teacher.  As you know Mr Baudains, who taught Year 1, has been appointed head teacher of Mont Nicolle School and so we need a teacher to replace him.  We also need a teacher to replace Mrs Royle, one of our Reception teachers, who is taking a year’s secondment.  When people move on it creates opportunities for staff to change year groups and we are going to have some movement in Key Stage 1.  Mrs Hickling is going to be moving into Year 1 and Mrs Galvin is moving into Year 2….hence the advert for a Year 5 teacher.  I hope to make the two appointments before half term and obviously will let you know as soon as I have done so.

We have a very busy and exciting term ahead – there are Residential trips, lots of class visits out-and-about, many visitors coming into school, a Whole School Celebration of Learning Afternoon, Sports Days, a ‘Move Up to your new class’ day, and so much more.

This term in our staff meetings we are focussing on Assessment for Learning.  We will be looking at how we can ensure that the children are very clear about what it is that they are learning, how they will know exactly what they have to do to be successful, how they will know what they have done well and what they need to do in order to make further improvements.   With all these things in place children are empowered to take responsibility for their learning.

We are trying to build up a ‘merry band’ of parents who could come in, first thing in the morning, to hear children read.  If you have been police checked and are able to come in between 8.30 and 9.00 that would be marvellous.  If you have not been police checked but think you would like to help please see Mrs Chambers for a police check form.  Ms Steg is co-ordinating this and I know will be delighted to hear from you.

You may have noticed that our white mini-bus has not been parked on the track for a while, that is because it is no longer ‘fit for purpose’.  The mini-buses are a vital resource for us and we need two to be able to take a whole class out.  The amount they have been used reflects how much we create exciting opportunities for the children by using the island as a

learning resource.  It is going to be very expensive and therefore will take a long time for the PSA to buy a new bus to replace the old one.  They are trying to think ‘creatively’ so if you know of any avenues we can explore to get sponsorship for a new mini-bus please let me know.

Over the last few years we have been very excited when blue tit families have laid their eggs in our bird boxes with web-cams. The TV screen in the Entrance Hall where we could see all of this happening, has become a focal point of the school as we have watched the nests being built, the eggs hatching, the parent birds working incredibly hard to feed the hungry mouths and then all fledglings leaving the nest. This year once again we have action in both boxes.  It is such a privilege to be privy to see what goes on in these nesting boxes.  Please pop in and have a look.

If at any time you have any concerns or worries please do not hesitate to pop in for a chat, or phone Mrs. Chambers to make an appointment.
